The kind atheist
Things to think about
“Two hands, two ways” photos and concept by me.
Today’s post was sparked by a meme I saw a while ago. It gives us food for thought.
“A kind atheist is better than a cruel believer.
A compassionate human is better than a judgmental worshiper.
A person who uplifts others is better than one who hides behind religion while causing harm.”
The meme I saw had a picture of the Dalai Lama, and it referred to “Buddha’s teachings.” As with many philosophical memes, neither attribution is correct. There’s no record of the Dalai Lama having said such a thing, and those who know ancient Buddhist teachings recognize that this meme sounds too modern to fit into that category.
However, the saying itself has merit. We will attribute it to good old “Anonymous,” the source of many things over the years.
I don’t intend to criticize religion. Religious worldviews give meaning, solace and resources to many people. However, it is fair criticism when cruelty, judgementalism and abusive things are done in the name of any religion. That is wrong.
A worldview which promotes kindness, compassion and support is worthwhile. Those are the views I listen to and adopt – regardless of the label attached to them. I guess that’s a functional view. So be it.
The Dalai Lama DID say something similar to the meme. He has often said, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” This saying appears in many of his teachings and interviews, and it reflects his open-minded spiritual philosophy that the core of all faiths—and basic human goodness—is compassion and love. I agree.
